1. CIFOR is looking for a dynamic and creative Media Liaison and Outreach Manager.

Profile

Principal Accountability
The Media Liaison and Outreach Manager develops, implements, evaluates and continuously improves media relations and outreach to build CIFOR’s reputation and to inform and influence the opinions and behaviors of stakeholders, opinion leaders, donors and the global forestry, environmental and poverty reduction communities.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Communications, she/he:

Leads the development and implementation of media and outreach strategies to build CIFOR’s international reputation and to maximize the policy and development impact of its research.
Supports the development and implementation of CIFOR’s communication, knowledge, marketing and fundraising strategies.
Provides strategic communications advice to CIFOR’s management and researchers.
Manages ISG during the Director’s absence.
Manages media tracking and monitoring, key message development, strategic positioning and crisis management.
Trains and assists CIFOR researchers in the integration of communication, learning and knowledge sharing in their research proposals and work.
Leads the development and implementation of communication plans for CIFOR’s involvement in major global events.
Shapes opinion by identifying, writing and pitching stories, OP-EDs and other editorial products in influential media and journals.
Proposes, writes and produces print, multimedia, video and web communication products.
Oversees the development and use of CIFOR’s key messages.
Supervises the work of communication consultants and agencies.
Ensures a powerful and effective web presence.
Supervises media and outreach staff.
Helps CIFOR staff to improve media and writing skills.

Requirements
Degree in journalism, communications, or a related discipline.
Outstanding negotiator and communicator with proven track record in placing stories and editorial products in higher-tier print and broadcast media.
Extensive international-level experience as a spokesperson
Extensive network of international and national contacts in print, broadcast and new media.
Knowledge of current theories and best practices in communications.
Excellent judgment and ability to think strategically.
Strong strategic planning skills for communication and knowledge management.
Outstanding English writing and speaking skills, and proficiency in other international languages is desirable;

Principle accountability
Under the direction of the Director of Communications, provide a consistent and powerful brand image through written communications, ensuring all written communication materials are well conceptualized and written to meet the needs of target audiences. Develop, implement, evaluate and continuously improve CIFOR’s capacity to inform and influence audiences through written communications.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Communications, she/he:

Assess CIFOR’s publication needs and develop and implement an annual publication plan
Assess and prescribe appropriate style, form, reading levels to meet needs of various audiences
Evaluate effectiveness of CIFOR publishing activities
Lead the development and refinement of CIFOR’s publishing policies and processes
Write, edit and proofread external and internal communication products, including speeches, press releases, articles, web text, advocacy materials and major publications
Work closely with graphic designers and web team members to develop reader friendly, attractive communication products and channels
Serve as secretary of CIFOR’s publications committee
Provide plain language writing skills training and communications consultation
Develop and manage a roster of writers, editors and proofreaders
Ensure all written communication products meet CIFOR’s quality standards
Perform related tasks as required

Strong negotiating skills. Excellent communicator, able to listen to and engage with multilateral, bilateral, corporate and foundation donors.

Principle accountability
Develop and implement a resource mobilization strategy to support the realization of CIFOR’s strategic plan and growth objectives.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Communications, she/he:

Define CIFOR’s donor relations strategy, including private sector and cause-related marketing, based on market intelligence
Along with the DG and the DDG, lead donor communication, including development of key donor reports
Prescribe, lead and conduct market research and marketing initiatives to assess donor priorities and identify opportunities for resource mobilization
Help to define, implement, evaluate and continually improve CIFOR’s marketing/communications strategy, including corporate positioning, comparative advantages, key success factors, major players (stakeholders, influencers and competitors)
Lead the development, implementation and continual refinement of a Customer Relationship Management system
Oversee development and writing of highly competitive grant proposals
Ensure alignment of research with the corporate strategy
Establish quality standards for proposals and concept notes and ensure achievement (through monitoring, mentoring and training)
Ensure communication and knowledge management are built into every project proposal
Prepare key donor documents in coordination with Information Services Group (ISG), Financial Services and Research Programmes
Develop and maintain database of donors, project concept notes and project proposals
Help scientists and management prepare and negotiate donor funding of proposals
Assess on a bi-annual basis CIFOR’s performance on project development and approval
Maintain project tracking system and ensure all donor funding requirements are met
Manage project development unit staff

At least 5 five years experience in resource mobilization/fund raising and proposal development for an international research or development organization
Experience with bilateral, multilateral funding agencies, and familiarity with private foundations that fund conservation activities
Experience developing and implementing marketing strategies a benefit
Proven negotiation, strategic planning and execution skills
Strong English writing and speaking skills
