Overview:

Over the past decade, the Bank’s external Web site — www.worldbank.org — has dramatically changed the institution’s ability to reach out to the development community. The site provides nearly two million visitors a month with timely information and serves as a symbol of the institution’s transparency and willingness to work with clients around the world. It is the Bank’s most important tool for sharing knowledge, communicating our activities, and demonstrating our effectiveness to the world. Improving the quality and presentation of information on our site is critical to fulfill the Bank’s development and communications goals.

The Environment Department is looking for a consultant to serve as Web Editor for the external websites www.worldbank.org/environment and www.worldbank.org/climatechange and provide support in managing internal web-based outreach. This position requires knowledge of development and poverty reduction issues as they relate to issues including Climate Change, Biodiversity, Coastal and Marine Management and Environmental Health. The candidate should have the ability to conceptualize and execute complex editorial activities, have a proven eye for design and detail, be results-oriented, and capable of managing conflicting priorities while working with a diverse set of colleagues.

Responsibilities:

The Environment Department Web Topic Editor will:

1. Report to the Senior Knowledge Management Officer of the Environment Department (or other staff member designated by the Director or Senior Manager) and liaise with relevant staff (Environment Department Management and subject experts, SDN Anchor Communications Team, EXT Web Program, Knowledge Management, and IT) and external clients and partners as necessary, to ensure that relevant information is captured and surfaced, where appropriate.

2. Undertake an inventory of existing content and user-profile analysis and assist in the drafting of a sustainable, strategic action plan for the development and maintenance of the above-cited websites in support of the World Bank’s / Environment Department’s communications objectives (the action plan should be grounded in a baseline user profile analysis, and include hard targets to be reached, and a robust monitoring and reporting component).

3. Aggregate content, draft/rewrite content, edit and maintain the Environment and Climate Change site areas, ensuring timeliness of information, appropriate quality, accuracy, tone and style. The editor will also identify appropriate information pulls, drawing from sub-pages maintained by others within the Bank and links to relevant information on external sites.



4. Construct new web pages as necessary; oversee the decommissioning of obsolete pages and content.

5. Have a strong knowledge of web-based social media, analyze opportunities to participate in them, and manage eventual participation to achieve objectives of the action plan.

6. Provide support to the design and management of internal websites.

7. Support web-based internal and external knowledge management activities.

8. Manage translations of key web content, and ensure quality and accuracy of same.

9. Provide related support as requested by supervisor / senior management.

Selection Criteria:

• Bachelor’s Degree journalism, communications, international relations or related field with a minimum of 6-8 years (or Master’s degree with 4-6 years) of communications experience overall, with minimum of 2 years managing Web content (candidates with more extensive experience are encouraged to apply).
• Proven writing and editing skills, and perfect fluency in English, with an ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, direct and lively style.
• Experience producing for the web (basic knowledge of HTML and Photoshop preferred).
• Knowledge of international trends and political-economic issues related to development.
• Ability to initiate and manage a continuing editorial process and conceptualize and execute content packaging online.
• Strong knowledge of E-publish or similar software; at least intermediate-level PowerPoint skills.
• Familiarity with tools such as Omniture, SaS, Spss, Hitwise and Compete a plus.
• Experience in quantitative data analysis, media research, web analytics and data mining a plus.
• Ability to work capably under stress and to juggle multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
• Ability to problem solve with strong investigative/research skills.
• Self-starting attitude and ability to work well among a team of diverse professionals in a multicultural environment.
• Fluency in Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish (or a combination) a plus.
