Description
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow at SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit) at the University of Sussex. The successful candidate will join the Sussex Energy Group (SEG) in SPRU and contribute to the research of the Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand (CIED).
SPRU is internationally recognised as a leading research centre on science, technology and innovation policy. SEG is the largest research group in SPRU, one of the largest energy policy research groups in the UK and a partner in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and UK Energy Research Centre. SEG undertakes rigorous, inter-disciplinary research on energy and climate policy, focusing in particular upon energy technology innovation and the transition to low carbon energy systems. SEG currently has over 20 researchers and support staff and 14 doctoral students and is funded from an array of public and private sector sources. SEG successfully combines academic and consultancy research with active engagement with policymakers and other stakeholders.
The five-year, £3.7 million Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand is one of six RCUK-funded research centres on End Use Energy Demand (EUED).The Centre began work in June 2013 and involves an interdisciplinary team of social scientists from the Sussex Energy Group, the Sustainable Consumption Institute at the University of Manchester and the Transport Studies Unit at the University of Oxford. The Centre Directors are Steve Sorrell, Frank Geels and Tim Schwanen.
The Centre is developing a socio-technical understanding of how ‘low-energy innovations’ emerge, how they diffuse throughout the economy and what impacts they have on energy consumption. The Centre is investigating these themes through a number of projects focusing upon individual low-energy innovations, such as light rail schemes, district heating, energy service contracting and energy efficient non-domestic buildings, as well as cross-cutting projects to integrate research findings. The Centre includes a range of disciplinary perspectives (e.g. innovation studies, socio-technical transitions, economics) and places a high priority on engaging with stakeholders.
SEG wishes to appoint a highly motivated individual with suitable academic experience to contribute to this wide-ranging research programme. Applications are invited from established researchers with a strong track record in innovation studies and/or energy and climate policy. The successful candidate will be expected to help shape the Centre’s research programme, design and lead research projects, conduct empirical research, participate in funding bids, engage with stakeholders and contribute to the broader work of the Sussex Energy Group. We welcome applications from researchers with a range of empirical interests, including (but not confined to) low energy innovations for domestic buildings, heating/cooling systems, transport systems and the quantitative/qualitative evaluation of the systemic impacts of innovations on energy consumption.
The successful candidate will have
a PhD in a relevant area (e.g. innovation studies, science and technology studies, economics or similar);
a track record of high quality research and publication in the area of innovation studies, energy policy or related fields;
experience in leading research projects;
good knowledge of energy and climate policy debates, especially in relation to energy demand;
a track record of raising research income;
highly developed skills in communicating with diverse audiences;
enthusiasm, flexibility and a commitment to working within an interdisciplinary, policy-relevant field.

Director, CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry (FTA)
Closing date 31 Jan-2014
Overview The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a nonprofit, global research organization dedicated to advancing human well-being, environmental conservation and equity.
We conduct research that enables more informed and equitable decision making about the use and management of tropical and sub-tropical forest landscapes. We help policy makers and practitioners shape effective policy, improve the management of tropical forests and address the needs and perspectives of people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Our multidisciplinary approach considers the underlying drivers of deforestation and degradation which often lie outside the forestry sector: forces such as agriculture, infrastructure development, trade and investment policies and law enforcement.
CIFOR is looking for
Director, CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry (FTA)
Overview
The CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry: Livelihoods, Landscapes and Governance (FTA) is a large integrated research program that started in 2011. It is responding to the call for urgent, strong and sustained effort focused on forest management and governance, given the crucial role of forests in some of the most important challenges of our time: climate change, poverty, environment and food security.
The FTA brings together several hundred scientists from four CGIAR Centers: CIFOR, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), Bioversity International and International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), two non-CGIAR organizations (CIRAD and CATIE), as well as many other research and non-research partners. The program was initiated in 2011 with a ten-year horizon. The 2014 budget is US$89 million.
The FTA is led by CIFOR, which hosts the Management Support Unit, headed by the Director of FTA. For further information about FTA, see: www.cifor.org/forests-trees-agroforestry
Duties and responsibilities Summary of responsibilities
1. Provide intellectual leadership in building a shared vision for the FTA research agenda and impact pathways with a strategic perspective through which research outcomes lead to the achievement of long-term impacts.
2. Coordinate, monitor and support the work of FTA theme coordinators and focal points.
3. Facilitate and oversee the delivery of research outputs and contributions towards outcomes and impacts across themes in the program.
4. Coordinate FTA work plans, budgets, reporting, monitoring and evaluation, including working closely with the Consortium Office, Independent Evaluation Arrangement, Independent Science and Partnership Council and other CGIAR or related institutions.
Principal accountabilities

• Put in place all the necessary steps, such as policy engagement and communication strategies, in order for research outputs to contribute to achieving expected outcomes and impacts.
• Establish an internal platform for communication and coordination across the FTA thematic and cross-cutting themes in order to ensure synergies in the program implementation.
• Oversee progress of teams in delivering expected research outputs through the semi-annual technical reports (traffic-light reports).
• Coordinate annual reporting to the Consortium Board for all program participants.
• Supervise the design and implementation of an appropriate monitoring and evaluation system built on a sound theory of change and realistic impact pathways.
• In consultation with the gender coordinator and theme leaders, ensure proper consideration is given to gender and related issues in the programming, budgeting and implementation of FTA research and action activities.
• Coordinate internal and external reviews and evaluations, as requested by the Steering Committee, the Consortium Board or the Fund Council.
• Supervise staff in the Management Support Unit.
• Work closely with the Consortium Office and other CGIAR institutions for all of the above tasks.
Leadership and support to science and impact orientation
• Provide overall direction to and facilitate collaboration among FTA theme leaders, supplementing and complementing accountabilities of the organizations participating in the program.
• Facilitate collaboration and seek synergies among program participants, including data management, peer review processes, monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment.
• Build a shared vision among program participants for FTA objectives, ensuring adequate synergies and collaboration across the different contributing research themes.
• Ensure collaboration between FTA and other CRPs in order to complement the different CRPs’ research agendas and in the achievement of broader system level outcomes.
• Stimulate the development and adoption of cutting edge knowledge and methodologies in the research program, as well as innovative ways to achieve the program outcomes.
• Organize periodic FTA meetings to bring together scientists from across the CRP to present results, discuss and exchange research methods, develop strategies to maximize impacts and build stronger collaboration.
