Two REDD-focused PhD. Scholarships at the Australian National University
Location: Canberra, Australia, with fieldwork in Indonesia or Papua New Guinea

Two PhD. scholarships are available at the Australian National University as part of a project titled “Governance and Economic Incentives for Reducing the Contribution of Tropical Deforestation to Climate Change.” One scholar would research the influence of governance (including corruption, decentralization, and illegal logging) on REDD activities in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, while the other would research REDD incentive payments in the aforementioned two countries. Applicants must have completed an Honours degree or equivalent Master’s degree in economics, public policy, environmental management, or relevant discipline; and must be either a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or a permanent resident of Australia.

Graduate Program
PT. Rio Tinto Indonesia in collaboration with Sampoerna Foundation provides one (1) qualified individual with the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in Science, Social Science or Commerce at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia .
Upon completing the program, scholar is under a (n+1) binding program with PT. Rio Tinto Indonesia , where n = the number of years receiving the scholarship grant. The scholar must apply their knowledge and contribute significantly to PT. Rio Tinto Indonesia for (n+1) year.

Basic Eligibility
Applicant must satisfy ALL of the following conditions:
Indonesian citizen who is under 35 years of age when lodging the application.
Hold a local Bachelor’s degree from any discipline with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale).
Have a minimum of two-year full-time professional work experience after the completion of the undergraduate degree.
Submit the required English language requirement (TOEFL/ IELTS) and the Graduate Admission Test as required by each program, after the applicant is selected as the scholarship finalists:
- International TOEFL with a minimum score of 577 (PBT) or 233 (CBT) or 90 (IBT), OR
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) of minimum 6.5
Adhere with the scholarship rules and regulations, particularly in the (n+1) binding program with PT. Rio Tinto Indonesia .
Currently did not enroll in graduate or post-graduate program, or obtained a Master’s degree or equivalent.
Did not enroll or graduate from an overseas tertiary institution, unless was on a full scholarship.
Do not receive other equivalent award or scholarship offering similar or other benefits at the time of the award.
Demonstrate that without the scholarship, applicant is not able to afford an Overseas Graduate Program.
Scholarship Value
The scholarship’s worth is approximately AUD 68,000.- depending on the program’s fee, for the duration of study. This covers the following:
Graduate Admission Test and TOEFL/ IELTS reimbursement, one time only, based on original invoice, for the test taken no more than 6 months prior to the scholarship application;
University application fee;
Student visa application fee;
Return airfares from Jakarta to Sydney
Tuition fees, for the duration of study;
Living allowance, to support living costs during period of study;
Literature allowance, to purchase textbooks required for study.

The Arcadia Fund has kindly provided funding for research studentships in Conservation Biology, to be based in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK. We expect to fund two students from less developed
countries to start in autumn 2009, with a third student to start a year later. We will also fund one EU student to start in either 2009 or 2010.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) 2009/2010
Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) provide opportunities for Indonesians to study in Australia at POSTGRADUATE level. Three hundred scholarships are expected to be awarded in 2009 for commencement in 2009/2010.
Candidates must undertake study in one of the four areas of development priority (see page ii).
ADS are offered in three categories: ‘Public’ sector, ‘Open’ and ‘Targeted’. Targeted applicants are employees of agencies associated with AusAID activities including government organisations, BUMNs, NGOs, CSOs and key state and private educational institutions which service the training needs of these organisations.Their nomination must be facilitated through the Project Leader or the relevant representative of an AusAID activity.
GENERAL INFORMATION NOTES
Public sector applicants are employees from Government departments, state universities and state-owned enterprises – this includes non-PNS employees. Their applications must be approved by the training or foreign cooperation bureaus (BKLN) of their local or central agencies before being submitted. No prior government approval is required for those in the Open category. Public servants cannot apply in the Open category.
Scholarships are for full-time study for a Masters or Doctorate degree from Australian tertiary institutions. The scholarship provides up to nine months full-time language and academic preparation in Indonesia. Students must achieve satisfactory results in this training to be able to continue their scholarships. Applications from women and candidates in provinces within the geographic focus of AusAID’s Country Strategy (see page ii) are encouraged.
The closing date is 5 September 2008.
Applications should be submitted as early as possible.
ELIGIBILITY

already hold an undergraduate degree, if applying for a Masters;
already have a Masters, if applying for a Doctorate;
apply for a degree at a level higher than their current highest qualification;

The ASEAN Scholarships for Indonesia is tenable for 4 years leading to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education ‘Advanced’ (GCE ‘A’) Level (or equivalent) certificate.
The Scholarship is for studies in selected Singapore schools from Secondary Three to Pre-University Two and is renewed annually, subject to the satisfactory performance of the scholar.
Students from Indonesia are welcome to apply for the ASEAN Scholarships for Indonesia to enter Singapore schools at the Secondary Three level. Candidates who are not short-listed for the scholarships will be considered for the Merit Awards.

PhD Scholarships for Research in Indonesia
PhD Scholarships for Research in Indonesia
Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to
carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and
local governance issues.
The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced
researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim
Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren
(Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and
Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled
'Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia'.
The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on
environmental issues in the context of conservation and development
programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve
understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural
and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local
participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity
and sustainability outcomes.
The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and
Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision
determined by the focus and site of each student's component of the
project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal
community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research,
while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research
site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building,
conservation and development projects are being conducted.
Essential criteria include:
* a first-class Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a
relevant social science field
* advanced fluency in Indonesian language
* field research or other equivalent community/overseas experience
* ability to work independently and as part of a team

Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to
carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and
local governance issues.
The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced
researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim
Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren
(Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and
Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled
'Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia'.
The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on
environmental issues in the context of conservation and development
programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve
understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural
and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local
participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity
and sustainability outcomes.
The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and
Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision
determined by the focus and site of each student's component of the
project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal
community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research,
while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research
site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building,
conservation and development projects are being conducted.
Essential criteria include:
* a first-class Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a
relevant social science field
* advanced fluency in Indonesian language
* field research or other equivalent community/overseas experience
* ability to work independently and as part of a team
